Lewis Hamilton took his second victory of the season at the Portuguese Grand Prix, making it the 97th victory of his career. Hamilton finished ahead of Max Verstappen, and Valtteri Bottas, who came in at P2 and P3 respectively. The race initially began with Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton at the front, while Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were behind them in the second row.
The first safety car was brought out when Alfa Romeo Driver, Kimi Raikkonen ran into his teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi, thus losing his front wing. This crash was utilized by Daniel Ricciardo, to climb from P16 to P13. After the race restart, Bottas was able to hold Hamilton in second place till lap 7 after which Verstappen timed his acceleration to pass Hamilton immediately around the outside of Turn 1 pulling Hamilton down to second place.
Hamilton was able to counter all this on Lap 11. He was able to pass Verstappen and Bottas after a few laps, on the main straight. After this Hamilton was successful enough to take the lead at the front. Realizing this, Verstappen and Bottas decided to go for late stops to try to win an extra point for the fastest lap. While both of them tried, it was Bottas who was able to take the bonus point for the fastest lap as Verstappen's lap was deleted when he left the track during his attempt. With this race, Hamilton was able to increase this championship lead by eight points.
