Mercedes-Benz To Start Local Assembly For EQ Models In India

With the demand for EVs increasing around the globe, Mercedes-Benz has decided to take the efforts and start making EVs for a better future. By next year, Benz is planning to introduce 9 EVs in their global line-up. They were also the first luxury car brand to bring an Electric vehicle in India, with the launch of the EQC in October last year.

Now, the brand is looking forward to increasing its EV presence in India. And as part of this, reports are suggesting that Mercedes flagship EQS sedan will come to the Indian market early next year.

The brand is taking the launch of EQS seriously and wants to make a strong impact in the market. Since the entry-level SUV segment is very cost-sensitive, the brand is planning to electrify its flagship lineup first then go down the ladder. Even though it may take some time, the brand wants to expand its electric presence throughout its entire lineup.

Along with bringing the EQS, the brand will also bring EQB in the future. Currently, the brand’s EQC is priced at Rs 1.04 crore (ex-showroom, India). This is because of the extra charges of importing. Introducing an electric model below the GLC may help the brand to find more buyers for its EQ range. But if they continue to import, then won’t help them to price their products competitively.

To price right, they are planning on starting local assembly and we may hear more news from Mercedes as part of localizing its EQ models in India. With this, they will be able to get over the Import Duty and other import taxes and expenses and reduce the price for their EV lineup in India.
