New Thar Vs Old Thar - What's Changed?

The original Thar was a very valuable product for Mahindra, as it was raw and roaring, however, it had been engineered on a very tight budget. This is why Mahindra now heard what the people needed and went ahead to utilise their time and money to create a proper daily-use off-roader. Currently, the new Thar doesn’t have any direct rivals that are nearly as versatile, which is why its true competition is with itself. Let's have a look at how different the new model really is from its predecessor:

Engine Specs

Now, for the sake of this comparison, both the versions of this car are diesel and manual. However, aside from that, a fast examination of the specifications shows that these 2 are completely different, as the new Thar gets a 6-speed manual, while the old one gets a 5-speed manual. The older Thar used a 2.5-litre diesel engine, which created about 105 HP and 247 Nm of torque, whereas the new model gets a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor that generates 132 HP and 300 Nm of peak torque.

Interior

In terms of interior, there is no doubt that the previous Thar was utilitarian within, as it didn’t even get an automatic window, let alone luxury features like touchscreen, auto AC among others. Meanwhile, the new one arrives with an enormous options list such as USB charging, a touchscreen with all the better connectivity choices, a multifunction steering wheel with cruise control and a vehicle dynamics display. Although there were none in the previous versions, you now get a couple of roof-mounted speakers as standard. The newer seats are also adjustable and quite comfortable along with being roomy and spacious.

Exterior

Talking about the exterior, the new Thar is heavily engineered from the ground up, as it is now much taller, wider, and longer than the older model in terms of dimensions. When it came out in 2010, the Thar was the modern interpretation of the classic off-roader, however, now the new Thar has become a road-friendly rugged monster, which can perform well at highway speeds during the week, yet be able to climb rocks and enter deep rivers at weekends.

Price

Although the new Thar is pricier than its predecessor, starting at Rs 12.10 lakh and going up to Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom), it still manages to be a fan-favourite and get loads of bookings in a short span of just six months.
