XC40 Recharge: Volvo's Entry Level All-Electric Luxury SUV

The Swedish car manufacturer, Volvo is all set to launch its all-electric SUV in India, the XC40 Recharge in the coming months. Volvo, well known for its safety is finally entering the electric vehicle segment in the Indian market as its peer Audi, Mercedez, and Land Rover has already started to make their mark in the luxury EV segment. The Volvo XC40 Recharge will be positioned above the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV but below Jaguar's upcoming I-Pace and Audi e-tron.

Volvo XC40 Recharge hardly incorporates any dissimilarities in design from its IC engine counterpart the standard XC40. The accounted differences which distinguish both the vehicles are sealed front grille and ‘Recharge’ badges. Instead of the traditional fuel-filling port, the EV gets a charging port in the same location. Also, the infotainment system on the XC40 Recharge comes with Google’s Android operating system. The unit also features Volvo On Call – the brand’s in-car connectivity tech – and is capable of receiving over-the-air updates.

Considering the price of XC40 T4 petrol at Rs 39.90 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India), the XC40 Recharge is expected to cost significantly premium. But Charles Frump, managing director, Volvo Car India, has indicated that the gap between the price of petrol and the BEV will be much less.

This leaves the XC40 Recharge with no direct contender to rival against in the Indian market. Bookings for the all-electric SUV will commence in June 2021, while deliveries will begin in a phased manner from October onwards.
